Prerequisites:

Prerequisites to qualify for level 2:
• Completed SFX level 1 (Or equivalent).
• 250 days of experience handling explosives.

Who the course aimed at:

This course is aimed at film special effects technicians wishing to advance their knowledge. For those already in the BECTU grading system, on completion of this course and the required number of hours experience, you will be able to apply for an upgrade to Senior Technician through the BECTU grading scheme.

Course Aims & Objectives :

To further educate personnel in the safe use of explosives in the SFX industry.
Provide training to a level appropriate for a sufficiently experienced Technician to apply for an upgrade to Senior Technician through BECTU.
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to;
 • Be aware of the aspects involved in creating a risk assessment and method statement covering use of explosives in SFX work.
 • Understand the environmental aspects of explosive SFX and how to reduce disturbance.
 • Understand the legislation, regulations, code of practice and safety requirements that need to be met to conduct safe explosive SFX.
 • Be able to readily identify the most common explosive articles and substances used for explosive SFX and understand their limitations and safe use.

Course Duration:

Total duration: 3 days:
Day 1: Classroom based.
Day 2: Practical day.
Day 3: Practical with course revision and exam to finish.

Cost (2023):

£1500 including VAT per person and includes course tuition, course notes, refreshments, and lunches.
(£350 deposit is required to secure a place on the course, which is non-refundable within 15 days of the start of the course with the balance of £1150 payable before the start of the course).
